Wine Tasting Tips For The Beginner

Most folks who experiment with wine for the very first time find that, on first blush, it can be quite sour and tart to the taste. The main reason for this is that many first-time wine imbibers are used to drinking sugary soda pops so, in comparison, the taste of wine seems bitter. Generally speaking, a newbie will choose a red wine. Even-though there are fairly sweet variations of red wine, it is typically still too bitter for a novice wine drinker. That being said, if you want to drink wine for health benefits, then red wine is your best option. Red wine is renowned for its excellent health benefits, thanks in no small part to its high tannin content, even though the tannins are precisely what makes it an acquired taste.

Glass of Chianti WineRed winemakers process the skin of the grapes into the wine which generates a tannic, leathery flavor. This skin is typically the reason for the great health benefits connected with red wine. It’s a well known fact that all grapes are white on the inside. To obtain the red color and the wonderful tasting flavor of red wine you’ have to include the skins in the winemaking process. The darkness of the wine is obtained by leaving the skins around the grapes for as long as manageable. The longer the skins are on the grapes, the darker the wine, the more tannic it gets and the healthier your wine will become. Source : Winemaking

To get to enjoy drinking the more tannic and tart red wines, Bordeaux for example, it is crucial to get your taste buds accustomed to it. A good way to do this is to start off drinking white wine. This way, your taste buds will get used to the taste of wine in general. Then move on to a rose, and ultimately introduce your taste buds to the more tannic reds.

some good wines to start out with are German Auslese or Kabinett wine. These white wines are relatively sweet. For somebody who is used to drinking a lot of soft drinks, this particular wine may taste more or less like normal due to the high sugar content. Thus, it’s the simplest way to get your taste buds acquainted to drinking wine. Yet another very sweet wine is Red Port. Be aware, the alcohol content is significantly higher but the taste of this type of wine is rich and sweet. It’s a great choice to get your taste buds used to the rich, complex flavours of wine.

Once you’ve gotten used to drinking the types of wine mentioned above, you’ll be all set to move up a level. It’s still a good idea to start out with a red wine containing low tannin levels, For example, a Merlot, Chianti or Beaujolais. Merlot is a grape variety with a very soft flavor to it. Chianti was traditionally made from 70% Sangiovese, 15% Canaiolo and 15% Malvasia bianca grapes, but now it is from 80 to 100% Sangiovese. You will find this wine to be fruity tasting. Finally, Beaujolais is a light wine made from the Gamay grape. Beaujolais is very easy-drinking, it is generally served chilled, almost to the point of white wine.

One word of advice, whether you’re a novice or an experienced wine drinker, it is always a good idea to go to your local wine shop and ask the owner’s views. The owner usually understands a lot more about the wines he’s selling and can figure out what wine will best suit your tastes. Tell him about your likes and dislikes and the occasions you want to drink the wine. He will probably be able to offer you a wide range of choices to pick from. It’s always good to try out numerous different wines to discover your own personal tastes.
